Quanta Computer looks to business opportunities from driverless cars

Notebook ODM Quanta Computer is looking at business opportunities arising from the development of driverless cars which will need cloud computing-based support. Quanta has been transforming operations from notebooks to cloud computing applications, according to company chairman Barry Lam.

Quanta has proposed automotive electronics solutions for use in driverless cars to potential clients engaged in the development of driverless cars, Lam said.

While global PC demand in 2015 is expected to continue to slip on year, Quanta's notebook shipments may remain unchanged, company vice chairman CC Leung said. Quanta shipped 16.5 million notebooks during January-May 2015, decreasing 6.8% on year, and expects shipments to increase beginning June due to the launch of Windows 10 in the third quarter, Leung indicated.

Quanta shareholders, at its 2015 meeting on June 18, passed the distribution of a cash dividend per share of NT$4.00 (US$0.13) for 2014, accounting for 81.63% of the corresponding EPS of NT$4.90.
